Chapter 3

Delanie bolted forward and tossed several panicked glances around the room. What was that? When it sounded again, she realized there was someone at the front door. She blew a sigh of relief. The movers. The ones who should have been there yesterday, but had taken a “wrong turn.” Yeah, right. They’d probably stopped at a strip club and gotten drunk.

She laughed at herself. Quit being so cynical, Delanie Claire Atwater. When had she become so disparaging? Ah! That was easy to answer. When she’d found out her husband was screwing a twenty-year-old via social media. Ex-husband, she corrected herself.

Rising from the makeshift bed she’d fashioned on the floor, she grimaced at the stiffness in her joints. She took a moment to stretch her tight muscles. Sleeping in her car would have likely given her a better night’s rest. Thankfully, she’d placed the quilt her mother had hand-stitched in the trunk of her vehicle for safekeeping, so she’d at least stayed warm through the night. Comfortable? That was another story.

The movers were early. When she’d spoken to them the day before, they’d told her it would be at least lunchtime before they arrived. It was only eight now. Moving toward the door, she finger-combed her hair and cursed her rough night.

While she felt safe there, a little extra protection couldn’t hurt.

Another round of rapping occurred. Hold your horses. Geesh. “Coming,” she said in the most cheerful voice she could muster pre-coffee. No use angering them before they’d unloaded her belongings. Oh, how she needed coffee and food. When was the last time she’d eaten?

After the shitty day she’d had yesterday, she definitely needed something strong and dark in her life. Or wine. Yeah, wine would do. While it was only eight in the morning in Vine Ridge, it was five in the afternoon somewhere.

Yesterday had been a disaster, but today—a wide smile spread across her face and confidence swelled her chest—today was going to be amazing. AH-MAZE-ZING. She could feel the positive energy seeping through her. Nothing would go wrong today.

Opening the door, the smile instantly slid from her face. Staring into the chiseled mug of Mr. Main Street, she said, “You.” This wasn’t the something strong and dark she needed, but he did have the same warming and perking effect as coffee.

Just as he had the day before, he commanded admiration. The man was obnoxious, rude, pigheaded, sarcastic, but fine as hell. In the midst of lusting over him, something urgent occurred to her. How did he know where she lived?

With that, a bounty of questions flooded her brain: Had he followed
